IEEE Update of the International Roadmap for Devices and Systems (IRDS™) Defines Parameters for Advancing Computer and Electronics Industry Growth

Roadmap’s forecasts track requirements for technology integration to drive growth of the global computing and electronics industry beyond 2030

PISCATAWAY, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#ICRC–IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, today announced the latest update of the IEEE International Roadmap for Devices and Systems (IRDS). The IRDS identifies indicators and trends across numerous industries to quantify technology and system requirements. This includes defining requirements for mobile, Internet of Things (IoT), communications-networks, automotive and computing. It provides stakeholders from research, academia, development, manufacturing and suppliers of equipment and materials a clear outline for a more coordinated approach regarding the development of electronic devices and systems. The updated complimentary IRDS can be downloaded by visiting the IRDS home page and joining the IRDS Technical Community. The updated IRDS includes a newly introduced Packaging Integration (PI) white paper, as well as supplemental information to the More than Moore (MtM) section highlighting the impact of emergent technologies on electronic systems and devices. These additions are particularly relevant since integration of different and complex technologies in mobile devices relies on advancing multichip packaging technologies (PI). The roadmap additions also show how the integration of quantum computing and communications will need to be carefully interwoven with classical technologies and architectures.

The IRDS is sponsored by the IEEE Rebooting Computing (IEEE RC) Initiative, a program of IEEE Future Directions. To ensure its content is global in scope, the IRDS partners with the SiNANO Institute in Europe and with the Systems and Devices Roadmap committee of Japan (SDRJ) of the Japan Society of Applied Physics who have developed regional roadmaps.
